A magnificent Horse Chestnut tree, Aesculus hippocastanum. This species was introduced in the late 16th century from Turkey and widely planted, it is not usually found in woodlands but some have found there way into the wild. The species lives for about 300 years and this one must be of that sort of age, it is huge. In my childhood this would have been the first tree I got to know, I loved playing conkers.
